If you are playing squash for the first time or a beginner, the biggest factor in learning and enjoying the game is the correct ball, not the shoes, racquet, or eyewear. The following website provides a great discussion on choosing a squash ball to match a player’s level of play.

The standard ball used in squash is the Dunlop “Pro” double yellow dot ball, which is the official ball at US Squash accredited competitions. The ball will begin as not very bouncy but will become more lively after it has been warmed up after being hit hard for several minutes. It is hard for beginning and intermediate players to keep the Pro ball warm and lively, making sustained rallies harder.

The Pro ball is not the best ball for all players. Therefore, Dunlop offers other squash balls to make the sport more fun by offering balls appropriate for players with different abilities.

In order from least bouncy to most, Dunlop also offers the Pro, Competition (single yellow dot), Progress (red dot), and Intro (blue dot) balls. These balls offer more bounce than the Pro ball, creating longer rallies and a better on-court experience for players below an advanced skill level.

As players improve, they should move to a more challenging ball.

The Pro, Competition, Progress and Intro balls are readily available through online squash retailers and Amazon. The Front Desk at the YMCA South facility has Pro, Competition, and Intro balls for use.
